Traditional Publishers Can’t (and Won’t) Help You

The publishing industry is fast becoming irrelevant. At least relative to the power of social media to move books from store bookshelves to home bookshelves. The big publishers have been shockingly slow to adapt, to the detriment of authors everywhere.

The takeaway is that authors are more likely to starve while waiting to recoup their advance than to have their publishers assist them with their marketing in any meaningful way.

The responsibility - and the opportunity - lies with you and I.

Virtually everyone is on social media; that’s where your readers are congregating, hanging out, and sharing book recommendations daily.

So if you want to be seen (and make sales), you have to go where your future readers already are, and then enter the conversations they’re already having.

27.8% of my followers live in India, and 27.5% of my followers live in the United States, with the United Kingdom and Canada coming after that, at 3.6% and 3.4% of my audience respectively.

The buying power of American consumers is well-known and respected, and India has seen tremendous increases in literacy and consumer spending, making it a prime market for authors looking to expand their global reach as well.

16% of my followers are between the ages of 18-24, 35% between 25-34, and 24.1% between the ages of 35-44, with only 1.2% of them being younger than that, and the rest being older.

The age ranges that I’m hitting right now are full of readers who are either students or recent graduates gearing up to compete in the global marketplace, or established professionals always looking for that next competitive advantage that comes from finding and implementing that next perfect book.

62.4% of my followers are men, and 37.5% of my followers are women.

The library and the gym feel like home, but in the past I've also organized massive outdoor rock concerts in India, fought as a heavyweight boxer in Russia, spent time with Native American shamans in the jungles of Costa Rica, and worked as a nightclub bouncer and heavy metal record label executive.

Yeah, I know. I should write a book :)

What’s more, reading 1,250+ books over the last 10 years has launched me on a path of personal, financial, and intellectual growth that has been nothing short of incredible so far. And the future should be even more incredible.
