My Ambitious Reading Goals for 2025 (And How to Set Your Own)

Tonight’s newsletter looks a little bit different (for one thing, it’s much shorter), and that’s because I just wanted to pass along a few book recommendations/videos while I finish up my book breakdown of Feel-Good Productivity, by Ali Abdaal.

I’ve been working on it for a while now, and I’d say it’ll finally be ready on Tuesday!

One thing I do have for you though is my long-awaited podcast interview with Eric Jorgenson, author of The Almanack of Naval Ravikant, The Anthology of Balaji (both of which are simply incredible), and a lesser-known book called Career Advice for Uniquely Ambitious People.

We talk about the future of publishing, life extension, colonizing Mars, his work on an “Elon Musk” book coming out before too long, and more. It’s up on YouTube now.

I also just published my ambitious reading goals for 2025, and in that video I lay out some of my best advice for setting reading goals of your own, talk about a few of the books I have coming up, and at the end, share a few of my goals for the channel as a whole.

By the way, NOT everyone has to set reading goals. Just to be clear on that.

If trying to hit some arbitrary numbers of books read per year takes all the fun out of reading for you, then please, don’t do it. The world doesn’t need fewer readers.

For myself, I had a goal of reading 1,000 books before I turned 30 (I tell that story in the video), and now I have another goal of reading 10,000 books over the course of my life.

But that’s only because I find it motivating to set reading goals, including the ambitious ones I set for 2025, which are all laid out in the video.

Here’s the link to that if you’re interested. And I mean, even if you’re not interested, that’s still the link to the video :)

I always like to keep you stocked with book recommendations in each issue, so I’ll hit you with some more great ones:

These are the 10 books that I’ve recently updated on my Patreon. The links below all go to Amazon, but Patreon members (and Premium members of The Reading Life) get all of my book notes and summaries of each one:

My goal is to update at least 20 more of my book notes before the end of the month, and of course I’ll keep you updated on that.

Then there’s my friend Kristen Butler, author of the bestselling book, The Comfort Zone, who has a new book out called Instant Positivity: 365 Ways to Become 1% Better Every Day.

Speaking of comfort zones, I’m reminded of my friend Stacey’s excellent sales book, Selling From Your Comfort Zone, which I read early last year and found quite useful.

And speaking of rockstar female entrepreneurs, the associative nature of the mind causes me to think of my friends Sarah Blankenship and Nicholle Overkamp, who help smart women take control of their financial future.

I’ve gotta be real honest here…I don’t love the title of their book.

But hey, I’m not the target market! And they’re excellent at what they do, with some greatly valuable financial advice to share, so here it is.

Again, you might find my podcast conversation with Eric Jorgenson really interesting - he’s just one of the smartest, most optimistic people I know, and his investment firm is literally building the future of humanity. Very exciting, and very cool.

But I also have another podcast coming up with Joshua Lisec, the million-dollar ghostwriter of more than 80 books(!), including So Good They Call You a Fake, one of the better business books I read last year, and our episode will be published in just a few years. You’ll hear about it when it’s live!

"So the secret to success...to gaining it, to having it, is to give, give, give. The secret to getting is giving. And the secret to giving is making yourself open to receiving."
