Take What Your Haters Say About You and Turn It Into Cash

Lately I’ve been feeling starved for some great stories, so I’m leaning more heavily into reading fiction in 2025.

That being said, one of the best business books I read last year was So Good They Call You a Fake, by Joshua Lisec, and I was able to interview him for my podcast, which is live now on YouTube.

In the episode we talk about how haters are actually one of your BIGGEST marketing assets, how to stand out when you're just starting your career, how to turn controversy that would get most people fired into hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit, and more…

Joshua’s book is just studded with valuable business lessons and practical tips for monetizing your expertise (and not just on a small scale, but in terms of being a globally-recognized expert at what you do), and here are my complete book notes, that you can just have for free. I’ll drop a few of my favorite quotes below too…

“If you’re not getting accused of fraud because your results are so mind-blowing to normies, you aren’t challenging yourself. Be so good they call you a fake.”

===

“The more people who claim you’re too good to be true, the more publicity you get.”

===

“The opening chapter of your book is a sales letter for the rest.”

===

“We don’t say, ‘She’s a course creator, let me tell you about her new masterclass.’ We say, ‘This author wrote THE book on the topic. She knows what she’s talking about.’ The mastery of subject matter as conveyed by authorship commands respect in a way no other marketing investment, information product, or services package can. As my friend and client Greg Reeves puts it, ‘You can’t mail a tweet to a client.’”

===

“One of the most important assets for your success is to cultivate organic haters.”

“We have been watching people succeed and fail for thousands of years, and in distilling and codifying our findings and observations, we’ve learned an important lesson: the people who win make the right sacrifices and the people who lose don’t.

That’s an unforgiving and unpalatable idea, but also powerful and empowering, because it says that there’s no telling what you might be able to do if you’re willing to pay the full price.”
